Appearing in court for the first time, alleged Colorado gunman James Holmes seemed to be oblivious to what was going on around him. What was really going on with his demeanor? INSIDE EDITION reports.
It was the face of evil. The accused Dark Knight Rises madman appeared in court for the first time, looking spaced out, with shaggy hair dyed a freakish two-tone orange.
"Probable cause to believe you committed the offense of first-degree murder," said the judge.
24-year-old James Holmes seemed oblivious to what was going on around him. He stared blankly into space for much of the hearing. Sometimes, he was downcast, other times he shut his eyes.
Holmes said not a word during the twelve-minute hearing, which took place three days after his bloody rampage at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, that left 12 people dead. Holmes's public defender, Daniel King, was bombarded with questions as he left the courtroom.
James Holmes' behavior when he's not in front of a judge is reportedly not nearly so calm. He's said to not be cooperating with authorities, and even spitting on guards at the Arapahoe County Jail. One freed inmate says Holmes is showing no remorse and is, "acting crazy, like he's in a movie."
Many of the victims families came to court for the hearing. Among them, the grieving father of six-year-old Veronica Mosner, the youngest of those who lost their lives.
David Sanchez was at the courthouse because he wanted to see Holmes face-to-face. His son-in-law, Caleb Medley was wounded in the massacre. Caleb's wife is due to give birth today.
"I think it's going to be a long recovery," said Sanchez.
So, was Holmes' zonked-out appearance for real?
Psychologist Jeff Gardere told INSIDE EDITION, "He may be malingering. That's the clinical term for making yourself look worse than you actually are."
