FBI Releases Serial Killer Confessions

FBI Releases Serial Killer Confessions

Airdate: 12/04/2012

Israel Keyes is the face of "Pure evil."

In a chilling, just-released audio confession of serial killer Israel Keyes, he tells the FBI he likes to kill.

Keyes said, “I'm two different people, basically. And the only person who knows about what I'm telling you, the kind of things I'm telling you, is me.”

FBI Investigator replied, “How long have you been two different people?”

Keyes said, “Long time. 14 years.”

In Keyes' 14-year murder spree, he traveled all over the country, committing at least eight murders in Alaska, Vermont, New York, and Washington state. The FBI says there may be many more.

Keyes, a 34-year-old construction contractor, committed suicide in his Alaska jail cell on Sunday.

INSIDE EDITION spoke to criminal profiler Pat Brown, author of Killing for Sport: Inside the Minds of Serial Killers.

Brown said, "Keyes is a psychopath. He is a murdering psychopath which makes him as evil as they come. Keyes is lying about having two personalities. That is just a bunch of garbage he is making up to sound like he is a schizophrenic, so, let me blame it on some sort of biology problem or chemical problem."

Keyes had already confessed to the murder of Samantha Koenig, an 18-year-old barista who he abducted from a coffee stand in Anchorage last February. Police later found Samantha’s body under the ice in a frozen lake.

While in jail, Keyes shocked investigators when he also confessed to killing a Vermont couple, Bill and Lorraine Currier, in 2011.

Details about their murders were released for the first time on Monday.

Tristram Coffin, U.S. Attorney, said, “By all accounts, they were good people who encountered a force of pure evil acting at random.”

Keyes traveled vast distances to find victims and flew to the lower 48 states to stalk human prey.

Brown said, "It would not surprise me to find out that Keyes has more victims out there across the United States. He traveled around a lot. He liked to commit different kinds of crimes."

He chose the Curriers in Vermont simply because they happened to satisfy what he was looking for.

State Attorney T.J. Donovan said, “Keyes was specifically looking for an attached garage, had no cars in the driveway, did not have children and did not have a dog."

Keyes wore a head lamp to see in the dark on the night of June 8, 2011, when he cut the Curriers' phone line and found the couple asleep in their bed. He tied them up and drove them to an abandoned farmhouse. He hit Bill Currier over the head with a shovel, and then raped Lorraine before strangling her to death.

“Though confronted with death, they fought to the end,” Donovan.

Their bodies have never been found. Now, with Keyes' suicide, the FBI says it may never know how many other victims there are of the monster who simply enjoyed killing.
