A 73-year-old grandmother landed in jail after slapping her granddaughter across the face. INSIDE EDITION has the story.
A frail grandmother is so traumatized she can barely talk about the night she spent in jail surrounded by drug addicts and violent thugs.
"I was so frightened. They scared the heck out of me," she said.
And you'll never believe how Terry Collier ended up in the slammer. Her own granddaughter had her arrested!
"She said the whole family are a bunch of losers," Terry said.
Terry said the teen was yelling and cursing at her so... "I got up and I slapped her in the face," said Terry.
That's when her granddaughter called 911.
"My grandmother launched herself from across the room and said, 'You ungrateful piece of [expletive deleted]' and slapped me," the granddaughter told the 911 operator.
The police arrested the 73-year-old on suspicion of battery. She was handcuffed and put in a police van next to a crack addict.
"She kept saying, 'I'm coming down, I'm coming down, I'm a crack head and I need my fix,' and they locked me in there with that woman," Terry said.
A mugshot was taken of the grandmother and she was fingerprinted and put in a crowded cell.
Now, her ordeal is sparking outrage. Even shock jock Bubba the Love Sponge took Terry's granddaughter to task live on the radio.
"You're a little foul mouthed, spoiled brat, get her way [expletive deleted]," he said.
Now the teenager is telling INSIDE EDITION her side of the story.
"I didn't mean for her to spend the night in jail, that was not my intention," she said.
18-year-old Felicia Collier says she loves her grandmother.
"I was angry and I said things I didn't mean to say," she said.
Felicia was in court when her grandmother was arraigned and she asked the prosecutor to drop the charges.
"I never ever, ever, ever thought they would take her away for the night," Felicia said.
The grandmother's attorney, Kevin Hayslett, says the real villain here is the zero tolerance law that compelled the police to arrest a 73-year-old for a slap.
"If a law enforcement officer arrives on the scene and there's any evidence of domestic violence someone is going to jail," he said.
Despite her ordeal, Terry hopes she and her granddaughter can someday patch things up.
"I still love her, but it's going to take me a while to get over this, that's for darn sure," Terry told INSIDE EDITION.
The charges against Collier have now been dropped.
