Arvind Mahankali Wins Scripps National Spelling Bee

He's the new king of Queens.

A 13-year-old from Queens, New York just won the Scripps National Spelling Bee with a word that may not be familiar to many of you: knaidel.

It's the German-Yiddish word for a dumpling. Also known as a matzo ball!

Arvind Mahankali aced it, which was doubly sweet because the previous two years he tripped up with German words and had to settle for third place both times.

You could see him react last night when he realized he'd gotten a German word again.

But third time's a charm.

So has Arvind ever actually eaten a knaidel?

"I have not, but my seventh grade science teacher said that, in honor of my victory, she will bring me a knaidel on Monday," he said.
