Former N.S.A. Employee Says He Blew The Whistle On Government Spying

Airdate: 06/10/2013

The beautiful girlfriend of whistleblower Edward Snowden, left behind when he went on the lam.

Lindsay Mills is a former ballet dancer and graduate of the Maryland College of Art.

Clinical psychologist Jeff Gardere told INSIDE EDITION, "It appears.

Until recently, they were living in a rented house in Hawaii. Neighbors say he blocked the windows with boxes.

One neighbor said, "Everything was completely blocked. It was like a wall of boxes all the way across."

And he built this secret room wired for computers.

It seems the authorities were already on to him before he revealed his identity in such a dramatic way on Sunday. Last Wednesday, local police came to the house looking for him. But Snowden and his girlfriend were already gone.

Meanwhile, the whole world wants to know, where is Edward Snowden today?

A photograph, published in Britain's Guardian newspaper contains intriguing clues about how he's evading U.S authorities.

A light fixture in the background is a match for the one found in a $650-per-night room in the luxury Mira hotel in Hong Kong, where Snowden is believed to be hiding.

And a sticker on his computer seems to be the logo for TOR, a little-known software that is used to go on the internet without being traced.

Snowden worked for Booz Allen Hamilton, a Fortune 500 company that does work for the National Security Agency. But he had virtually no qualifications.

Here's what we've learned about him: He was born in Elizabeth City, North Carolina and raised outside Baltimore, Maryland. He never finished high school. He dropped out of community college. His first job was as a security guard at the N.S.A.

In the video interview, Snowden said, "I, sitting at my desk, certainly had the authority to wiretap anyone from you, your accountant, a federal judge or even the president if I had a personal email.

How does a guy with virtually no education land a $200,000-a-year job at the heart of a super-secret U.S. intelligence program? The answer might be his family connections. His mother, Elizabeth Snowden, is a chief deputy clerk at the U.S. District Court in Maryland.

There's also speculation Snowden may have been recruited because he was a talented computer hacker.

He says he may seek asylum in China, or Iceland, but wherever he goes he says he knows he'll be a target.

"You can't come forward against the world's most powerful intelligence agencies and be completely free from risk, because they're such powerful adversaries that no-one can meaningfully oppose them. If they want to get you, they'll get you," said Snowden.
