Chilling 911 Call From Connecticut Gunman
INSIDE EDITION has the chilling 911 call made by the Connecticut gunman who shot and killed eight co-workers at a beer warehouse before turning the gun on himself.
"I wish I could have got more of the people."
That was the blood chilling final message from the gunman who slaughtered eight co-workers at a Connecticut beer warehouse.
Truck driver Omar Thornton made the disturbing 911 call claiming he went on his bloody rampage because of racism at work.
Gunman: "This is Omar Thornton, the shooter over in Manchester."
911 dispatcher: "Yes, where are you, sir?"
Gunman: "You probably want to know the reason why I shot this place up. This place here is a racist place."
911 dispatcher: "Yes, I understand that."
Gunman: "They treat me bad over here and they treat all the other black employees bad over here too, so I just take it into my own hands and I handled the problem. I wish I could have got more of the people."
The company and his union say 34-year-old Thornton had made no complaints about racial harassment and had even been promoted. Thornton had raised similar issues at previous jobs.
The 911 dispatcher tries desperately to persuade him to surrender.
911 dispatcher: "We're going to have to have you surrender yourself somehow here, not make the situation any worse. You know what I mean?"
Gunman: "These cops are going to kill me."
911 dispatcher: "No they're not. We're just going to have to get you to relax."
Gunman: "I'm relaxed. Just calmed down."
911 dispatcher: "To have you, you know, turn yourself over."
We asked forensic psychologist Dr. Barbara Ziv to analyze the four minute call.
"He's completely disconnected from the horror that he's just committed. He has no empathy with the eight victims or their family," said Ziv.
For a brief moment it seems he will give himself up.
Gunman: "I guess maybe I'll surrender. Nah. They can come and get me. Have them come get me."
911 dispatcher: "Yeah, we wouldn't like to do it like that Omar. You know, it's already been a bad enough scene here this morning. We want you to relax."
Gunman: "I'm not going to kill nobody else."
911 dispatcher: "Okay."
Then he decides to commit suicide as state troopers close in.
Gunman: "I have to take care of business. Tell my people I love them and I got to go now."
911 dispatcher: "If you work with me we'll get this to stop. Okay? Omar? Omar? Omar?"
