Reactions Pour In Over Miss USA Mosque Comments
Reactions are pouring in over Miss USA Rima Fakih's comments to INSIDE EDITION on the proposed mosque near ground zero in New York.
There's strong reaction to Miss USA's interview with INSIDE EDITION about the ground zero mosque.
In the interviews, Miss USA said, "It shouldn't be so close to the world trade center. We should be more concerned with the tragedy than religion."
Rima Fakih, who is Muslim, is now making headlines for saying the mosque shouldn't be built there.
The front cover of the New York Daily News says "Beauty And The Mosque." And the New York Post blares, "Muslim Miss USA: Move The Mosque!"
Rimah's comment has now sparked a heated debate among bloggers.
"You are sooooo correct. You have my support 100%," writes one supporter.
"Beauty & brains. What a rare combination!" said another.
Others are clearly angered.
"This woman is an imposter Muslim. She will never enter the gates of heaven," said one blogger.
Another blasts, "This young woman is an idiot!"
The uproar over Miss USA is yet another example of just how volatile the debate over the proposed ground zero mosque has become. And not just here in New York. Anger over the construction of mosques seems to be spreading across the nation.
Things reached fever pitch Sunday as supporters and opponents of the mosque came face to face in lower Manhattan with dueling rallies
Now all eyes will be on Miss USA at tonight's Miss Universe pageant. As if she isn't under enough pressure, the Michigan-raised beauty is likely to come under fire from some in the Islamic world for showing so much bare skin, when she takes the stage in a bikini.
Fakih said, "My family is very liberal. We're very spiritual people but we're not defined by religion and to be quite honest with you, not all Muslims are strict Muslims."
Fakih gave America a sneak peak at one of her costumes for the pageant in a Youtube video. The gold lame get-up, complete with eagle wings, was created for Fakih by a Victoria Secret designer. She says she's dedicating the ensemble to President Obama.
