Alleged Domestic Abuse Survivor Who Performed From Hospital Bed: 'Music Helps the Healing'
Darrian Amaker ended up in the hospital after she says her boyfriend beat her for 10 hours.
Sitting in her hospital bed, singing through a battered, swollen and bruised face, a young woman who says she was brutally assaulted by her partner has become an Internet sensation.
Darrian Amaker, 24, videotaped herself singing "Life is Cheap," a song about the abyss of being beaten down and beaten up by a man she thought she loved.
She posted the video on Facebook, and it has been shared by hundreds of people as a testament to finding the will to leave an abuser and carry on with life.
The photographer, singer and writer wrote "My Love went straight psychotic and beat me brutally for ten hours" a few days after Thanksgiving. "He had planned it out. I was supposed to die."
In an email to INSIDE EDITION, Amaker said: "Making music helps with the healing."
The healing is going to be a long process.
She says her face is a half-inch wider now, thanks to severe bruising of her facial bones that have created ridges she said she can feel through her skin.
"I don't generally record videos of myself but it was the only thing I wanted to do in the hospital. I insisted - it felt important, and a small triumph to make something, salvage anything from my shipwrecked heart," she wrote in her post.
"Domestic violence is not a faraway issue. It affects people you know, cheerful people, people who sing, people who love," she said. "We the humans must be better, kinder, stronger. We the loving must not tolerate abuse. We the living must facilitate life."
Her former partner faces six felony counts in Rochester.
