'Grim Sleeper' Is Sentenced to Death For Killing Nearly a Dozen Women

The serial killer known as the "Grim Sleeper" has been sentenced to death for 10 murders that spanned twenty years.

A judge handed Lonnie Franklin Jr. the sentence Wednesday for murdering a teenage girl and nine women in South Los Angeles between 1985 and 2007.

The 63-year-old was convicted of the 10 murders earlier this year. However, detectives believe he may have killed 25 women or more over the course of his gruesome career.

Franklin earned his nickname from what police believed was his hiatus in his killing. However, it is now believed that the murders likely never stopped.

"What you’ve done is not justifiable under the laws of God or laws of man," Superior Court Judge Kathleen Kennedy told Franklin.

As she listed the name of each victim, Kennedy told him, "You shall suffer the death penalty" every time.

Earlier Wednesday, Kennedy denied his request for a new trial, the AP reports. The judge said the defense's claim of prosecutorial misconduct did not have merit.

Among the attendees at the sentencing were family members of some of Frankin's victims as well as five members of the jury that voted to sentence Kennedy to death.

Laverne Peters' 25-year-old daughter was among the Grim Sleeper's victims. She addressed the court prior to the sentencing.

"The defendant took my daughter, murdered her, put her in a plastic bag – a trash bag – like she was trash," Peters said. “My hope is that he spends the rest of his glory days in his jail cell, which will become his trash bag."

The murders of Peters' daughter and nine others occurred between 1985 and 1988 and between 2002 and 2007.
