Judge Sentences Man to Carry His Dog's Photo in His Wallet After He Killed Pooch

A North Carolina man who killed his dog will now have to carry a picture of him as part of his sentencing.

Fort Bragg Spc. John Garrett Burrow plead guilty to felony animal cruelty after tying the feet of his dog, Riley, to his snout with a parachute cord and leaving him in a pond to drown in 2014

Riley's body later floated to the shore.

Judge Jim Ammons sentenced Burrow to 30 days in jail and 100 hours of community service, which he as the opportunity to serve cleaning out cages at Cumberland County Animal Control. But, the more unconventional punishment was keeping a picture of the then 8-month-old dog in his wallet.

Burrow was also reportedly convicted of a misdemeanor for failing to provide proper medical treatment to Riley's injured leg.

“I have no excuse. I accept responsibility, and I have learned from my mistakes,” Burrow said in court.

Burrow claimed in court that he let the canine drown because of his financial position. Riley reportedly had a broken leg that needed surgery and Burrow said he didn’t have the money to pay for it.

Judge Ammon reportedly sentenced Burrow to carry the image because he wanted him "to remember Riley the way Riley was in full life."

"I don't do this lightly," he said in court. "What you did was horrible, absolutely horrible, and there are consequences to pay for that.

Burrow’s lawyer, David Courie, explained that Burrow is a man who made a mistake.

“Our client is a good young man, husband and father who made a bad decision under difficult circumstances,” Courie told InsideEdition.com. “He has accepted full responsibility for his actions.

"The picture of Riley will serve as an appropriate physical reminder of his dog and the poor judgment he used. “
