As Steve Harvey Stands By Scathing Memo, Woman Shows How It Should've Been Written
The host faced backlash this week after the memo was leaked.
Steve Harvey is not backing down after it was revealed this week that he penned a scathing memo to his staff, which he says was a plea to respect his space after years of being "bombarded."
On Friday morning, Harvey defended himself on his morning radio show about the memo, which was written a year ago and leaked this week.
“What I asked for was just, 'Can you respect my space?'" he said. “It just comes from four years of people just taking advantage of my kindness."
On air, Harvey claimed he had what he called "an open door policy" and felt like he was “getting ambushed" and "bombarded."
“Do you understand what it's like to be a celebrity?" he asked. "You already don't have much of your time, and people walk in your dressing room without knocking?"
He said he was the one who wrote the memo, which said, in part: “Do not open my dressing room door. If you open my door, expect to be removed."
Another directive read: “Do not approach me while I’m in the makeup chair unless I ask to speak with you directly."
“Do not wait in any hallway to speak to me" and, “If you're reading this, yes, I mean you,” were other statements. He concluded with, “It is for the good of my personal life and enjoyment.”
Now, executive coach, The Coaching Factory's Chelsea C. Hayes, has taken the memo and rewritten it with a kinder and gentler tone.
In a mock memo, she wrote for The Hollywood Reporter: “I cannot thank you enough for making Season 4 of the 'Steve Harvey' show one of the best experiences of my life. Your hard work is what makes it happen.
"I’ve been experiencing some challenges around finding time to eat, prepare, and check in with my family when we’re not shooting. This has become increasingly difficult and exhausting for me. For Season 5, please allow my dressing room to be a safe space where I can be alone so I can be sure to bring my absolute A game to each and every one of you.
"If any of you have ideas on a structured system we can implement outside of my dressing room for more touch points, please send those ideas to ABC (any representative you choose) by ABC (any date you choose).
"I can’t wait for this new season, thank you for all that you do!"
