Girl Loses Legs While Train Hopping

Train hopping is the latest craze among some college students, but when one teen tried it, both of her legs were severed in the dangerous act. INSIDE EDITION has the shocking story.

Caller: "Oh my God! Somebody just tried to jump on the train and severed her legs!"

A witness made a gut-wrenching 911 call when a college student trying to hop aboard a moving train suffered a grievous injury; both her legs were cut off.

Caller: "Don't move her! Don't move her! Oh my God!"

911: "All right, I've got an ambulance on the way for you, ok?"

The victim was train-hopping, a dangerous craze that involves hitching a free ride on a slow-moving freight train. It's spawned dozens of YouTube videos.

Videos on YouTube show some daredevils actually leaping from one car to another, as the train rumbles down the tracks.

In the latest train hopping accident, 17-year-old Anna Beninati, a freshman at Colorado State University, was trying to hitch a ride to school with three friends when she fell under the wheels.

Witness Nicole Crowley made the call to 911. Fortunately she's a paramedic and rushed to save her.

"I immediately just jumped into action, knew what needed to happen. I was talking to her, making sure she was still breathing," said Crowley.

Caller: "Don't pick her up, you guys! They're trying to pick her up."

911: "Ok, no, we don't want to do that. We don't want to move her."

Photos show two of Beninati's devastated friends moments after the tragic accident.

In a heartbreaking moment, you can hear Beninati scream when she finds out both her legs have been severed.

Caller: "How old are you, honey?"

Victim: "17."

Caller: "She's 17 years old.  What is your name?"

Victim: "Anna Beninati."

Caller: "Her name is Anna. Don't move. Don't move."

911: "What part of her leg was amputated? At the ankle? At the knee?"

Caller: "One is mid-thigh on the left side."

911: "Mid-thigh?"

Victim: "Oh, no!"
Caller: "I'm sorry, honey. I shouldn't have said that right in her ear, damn it!"

"I just remember looking down at her, she was just staring off into space. Her lips were blue, she was very, very pale. But she was still with us, she was still talking the whole time," said Crowley.

Beninati is listed in serious condition and her family released a statement saying they "are grateful to the outpouring of support for our daughter following this horrific accident."

It's a train hopping stunt that went horribly wrong, and a lesson to young people everywhere, never try something like this.
