She had some iconic hits in the 1970s and virtually disappeared. Now, at age 71 Helen Reddy tells INSID EDITION she's ready to sing again.
It's the most iconic feminist song in music history, Helen Reddy's "I Am Woman, Hear Me Roar.”
Helen Reddy was one of the biggest stars of the 1970s, with hit after hit.
Then, it seemed that overnight her distinctive voice was silenced. She decided to stop singing for an entire decade and become, of all things, a hypnotherapist. She also raised two children and endured three failed marriages.
INSIDE EDITION’s Diane McInerney asked, “Why did you stop singing?”
Reddy replied, "I was tired. I was bored from singing the same old songs all the time. I needed a break."
But now, at age 71, the Australian-born singer is returning to the spotlight.
McInerney asked, “What triggered your change of heart?’
Reddy answered, “It was triggered, I guess, by my sisters 80th birthday. She had a huge party and she asked me if I would sing a duet with her. I heard my voice for the first time in 10 years and I thought, hmmm, that’s not bad. Maybe I should go back to work.”
Helen is now touring the USA, singing a collection of her favorite songs but no matter where her career takes her, Helen will always be remembered for that iconic song that inspired women everywhere.
Reddy said, "I wanted girls to have the idea of strength, of being strong. What being a woman really meant."
