Disney is bringing back the beach movies for a whole new generation. Will it be the next big hit? INSIDE EDITION has more.
They were one of the most popular film genres ever—beach party movies.
They were summer staples in the 50's and 60's and made stars out of people like Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello.
But now, half a century later, the summer beach movie is back!
Disney Channel is coming out with Teen Beach Movie next month. But this isn't your grandfather's beach movie. This 21st century take is more like High School Musical meets The Twilight Zone.
Two young surfers hit a huge wave and are transported to another dimension where summer never ends and gangsters dance rather than fight.
The film stars newcomers like Garrett Clayton who looks a lot like Zac Efron. And co-star Maia Mitchell even resembles Selena Gomez. The movie also stars Grace Phipps, who hopes to be the next Annette Funicello.
Phipps told INSIDE EDITION, "I actually grew up on the the old, early 1960's Frankie and Annette movies. We watched them every Friday pizza and movie night in my family."
There's already buzz in Hollywood that all this surf, sand, and song could turn into a franchise.
Sophie Schillaci, staff editor The Hollywood Reporter told INSIDE EDITION, "Disney has been looking for their next High School Musical and I think they found the right fit with this and it's the perfect summer movie."
