Former JonBenet Ramsey Murder Suspect Charged in Colorado Child Porn Case

Gary Howard Oliva, 52, was arrested in Boulder on Friday after he allegedly uploaded more than 20 sexually explicit pictures of children online.

Nearly 20 years after little JonBenét Ramsey was found murdered in her Colorado home, a man once eyed in the unsolved killing has been charged with sexual exploitation of a child, authorities said.

Gary Howard Oliva, 52, was arrested in Boulder Friday after he allegedly uploaded more than 20 sexually explicit pictures of children to a Google email address, according to reports.

Some of the photos that were uploaded in April allegedly showed a girl between the age of 4 and 6 engaging in sexual acts with a man, an arrest affidavit viewed by The New York Daily News read.

All children pictured were under 10 years old and were shown engaging in sex acts with each other or with adult males, The Denver Post wrote.

Oliva was one of several people named a suspect in the 1996 Christmas killing of JonBenét, who was 6 years old when she was found dead in her family's basement. The blond-haired child beauty queen had been struck on the head and strangled.

Oliva was identified as a convicted and registered sex offender who may have been close to the Ramsey home the night JonBenét was killed in a 2002 episode of CBS’s “48 Hour Investigates.”

The program claimed that Oliva called a friend after JonBenét was murdered, saying he was in Boulder and “had done something horrible” and had hurt a child.

Late Colorado Springs homicide detective Lou Smit, who was hired to assist the Boulder District Attorney’s Office in the investigation, said Oliva appeared at a candlelight vigil outside the home one year after the murder, the Daily Camera wrote.

He was allegedly found to be carrying a stun gun during a December 2000 arrest, which was a weapon Smit believed was used on JonBenét.

Oliva was allegedly found to be carrying a picture of JonBenét and a poem he had written, titled, “Ode to JonBenét.”

He denied that he had anything to do with her death, but told “48 Hours Investigates” that he believed “she came to me after she was killed and revealed herself to me. I’d like to see a memorial set up for her. I haven’t seen that, anywhere.”

The most recent charges against Oliva came after he was reported to Google by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which forwarded the “cybertip” to the Boulder Police Department through the Internet Crimes Against Children task force.

Oliva allegedly accessed child pornography through an IP address that was “very similar” to an address he used with police when he registered as a sex offender in October 2015, the affidavit said.

Oliva, who says he is homeless, most recently registered as a sex offender in Colorado on June 1 and is a convicted sex offender in Oregon, the affidavit said.

He was formally charged with two counts of attempted sexual exploitation of a child and one count of sexual exploitation of a child, all Class 4 felonies.

He is being held at Boulder County Jail on $10,000 bail. His preliminary hearing is set for July 11.
