Inside Luke Perry's Final Moments
The actor's 18-year-old daughter jumped on a 20-hour flight from Africa to be with her father in Los Angeles after his stroke.
Luke Perry’s daughter flew across the world to be with her dad after word got out of his stroke last week.
Sophie Perry was in Malawi doing charity work when she got the news that her father had suffered a massive stroke.
The 18-year-old jumped on a plane for a 20-hour flight from the African country to Los Angeles and made it just in time to say farewell to her father.
Luke Perry arrived at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center unconscious and was immediately sedated. But his brain never recovered — the stroke had done too much damage.
Dr. Mehmet Oz spoke to Inside Edition about what the final hours of the "Beverly Hills, 90210" star's life must have been like.
“Although I don't know the specifics of Luke Perry's case, I am sure they did EEGs and identified the fact that there is brain death, which is what compelled the family to turn off the support," he said. "Luke was already in heaven by the time they made that decision. It is not like they pulled the plug, there was no chance of him being the person he was before."
It turns out it's not uncommon for someone as young as the actor and seemingly so healthy to suffer a stroke.
"Every 40 seconds there is a stroke, so there is plenty to go around," Oz added. "When these strokes happen and there are risk factors that predetermine — high blood pressure, high blood sugar, high cholesterol, folks who are overweight but he wasn't, cigarette smokers and he smoked when he was younger — these are issues that are additive and sometimes they can rush to the arteries inside your body without you looking different on the outside. We have no idea what happened to Luke Perry. Sometimes it is bad karma, bad luck."
Perry is remembered as a teen heartthrob of the 1990s. At the height of his fame, he sparked a frenzy wherever he went, as throngs of screaming teenage fans would flood shopping malls to see him.
He was considered the James Dean of his generation when he came onto the scene but was a down-to-Earth and devoted father.
Friend Kelly Ripa said on Tuesday that his children "were in his thoughts all the time.”
Rippa got emotional as she remembered Perry. He was a close friend who starred alongside her husband, Mark Consuelos, in the CW series “Riverdale.”
“This was a good, good man,” Ripa said. “You won't hear a person say otherwise. He was a good soul, a gentleman.”
