2018 was also the year that beloved morning host Kathie Lee Gifford caught everyone by surprise when she announced that she was leaving the “Today” show. Gifford has hosted the fourth hour of the show with Hoda Kotb for 11 years.
Dr. Christine Blasey Ford's testimony captivated Americans as she accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of improper behavior when they were both teenagers. Millions then watched his angry response on his way to being confirmed.
Sen. John McCain’s death in August was covered wall to wall as President Trump was not invited to the funeral because of his contentious relationship with the longtime politician.
Former first lady Barbara Bush passed away in April at the age of 92. Just seven months later, her husband, President George H.W. Bush, followed her.
Trump did attend George H.W. Bush’s funeral but there was little interaction between him and the Obamas, who were seated next to him. There was also zero interaction between Trump and Hillary Clinton, who also attended.
Finally, “Queen of Soul” Aretha Franklin got a spectacular sendoff as the biggest names in showbiz performed at her funeral in Detroit in August. Jennifer Hudson, Stevie Wonder, Ariana Grande and more participated as her epic goodbye lasted more than eight hours.
