Burned Girl, 1, Found Dead Near a Stove After Being Left Home Alone : Cops

J'Zyra Thompson was 19 months old when she was found severely burned and dead in her Houston home after midnight Tuesday. Police say no adults were home.

A 19-month-old girl died while playing near a stove this week after being left alone in her Texas apartment, police say.

J'Zyra Thompson was found severely burned beside a stove in the Houston home, police say, along with her three siblings aged five and under.

J'Zyra's mother told officers at the scene that she'd been at work during the incident, according to KHOU.

It was not immediately clear whether the girl died while on the stovetop or if she had somehow gotten inside the oven.

Houston PD said in statement provided to INSIDE EDITION that they believe the death was just a terrible accident.

But that didn't keep family and neighbors from questioning how it happened, including J'Zyra's grandmother, Gina Dennis.

“Never leave your child home alone. Never,” Dennis told KHOU on Tuesday. "Just got the phone call to come out here and find out what’s going on... I’m hearing two different stories but I don’t know.”

Neighbors told the station they'd previously seen the kids outside the home with no supervision.

“With just a Pamper on, no shirt, no shoes or nothing,” neighbor Miranda Oneil Johnson said. “Like, running around. I’m like, 'Where is the momma or the daddy?'”

The mother of the children has not been charged with a crime, nor had any other arrests or charges been made.

An autopsy will be conducted by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

GoFundMe campaign has been created to help offset funeral costs for J'Zyra.
