Jim Calder was diagnosed with a rare form of non-smoking lung cancer two years ago and outlived his original diagnosis by a full year. He lost his battle with the disease on November 7th three days shy of his birthday.

In the weeks leading up to his passing, his son James, took on the ambitious task of having the stars of Jim’s favorite show record video messages for his dying father.

James started reaching out to the cast using social media and by posting articles about his new project.

Actor John O'Hurley who played J. Peterman, was the first cast member to respond. In his video message he performed a parody of his character while wishing Jim a happy birthday.

Other actors included Larry Thomas who portrayed the infamous Soup Nazi, Wayne Knight, who played Newman, Danny Woodburn, who starred as Mickey Abbott.  In total 16 members of the cast sent their video messages in.

As Jim’s birthday approached, his condition worsened and he had to undergo another round of chemotherapy before being admitted to the hospital.

The day before Jim passed away James and his mom began showing him the videos from the “Seinfeld” cast members to lift his spirits. Later that day Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who stared as Elaine, sent in her video.

“The amount of kindness shown to my family, not just by the actors and actresses, but by all the people who read the story, was overwhelming,” James wrote in a blog post for The Huffington Post.

“People wrote to me with leads about who they knew and how they knew some of the Seinfeld actors and how they wanted to help my family and I reach out to them. Others just sent us beautiful emails about their own families and experiences with cancer.”
