Lost Baby Beaver Makes Friends At City Metro Station

"He would have had to come some distance to find himself next to the metro stop," a witness said.

An adorable baby beaver somehow reached a D.C. subway station where he stole the hearts of onlookers.

Jonathan Murray, who lives nearby, told InsideEdition.com that he was on his way to a CVS when he noticed a small crowd gathering near the Van Ness metro station.

That's when he noticed the adorable beaver.

Murray said that since moving to the nation's capital in August, he's spotted deer and various wildlife in the neighborhood, but never a beaver. "That's the first time I've ever seen a beaver in the flesh outside of a zoo or on T.V. It was quite unusual to see," he said.

Murray started filming as a child, who had become quite fond of the baby beaver, reached out and stroked the critter.

"I don't know why he's going up my leg!" a child could be heard saying in Murray's video as the beaver hops atop a neon green sneaker and attempts to climb his pant leg.

"He wasn't my child, so I wasn't in any position to say 'Dude, don't do it!'" Murray laughed. "It was really cute."

It is unclear how the beaver made it to the subway stop.

"He would have had to come some distance to find himself next to the metro stop," Murray told IE.com.

Though the beaver was seen near Rock Creek State Park, "it's not just across the road. Clearly it had gotten disoriented," he said.

Murray said the plaza where it was found had a little fountain with water leaking into the pavement, which he guessed attracted the beaver.

A police officer was already on scene when Murray spotted the beaver and had left momentarily to get a cardboard box from a grocery store nearby. When he returned, the officer loaded the beaver into the box and handed it over to D.C. Animal Care and Control.

Even though the beaver was found without a mother, Murray said animal control deemed him mature enough to survive in the wild. He was re-released in Rock Creek park, where a river could become the ideal forever home for this little lost animal.
