A University of Florida football player stopped the sexual assault of an unconscious woman behind a popular Gainesville bar, police said.
Gators linebacker Cristian Garcia was taking out trash at 101 Cantina, where he works as a bouncer, when he saw what he thought was a couple having sex by a Dumpster, he told First Coast News.
As he got closer, Garcia said he realized the young woman had passed out.
“The girl was basically unconscious, so I knew there was no way she could be giving consent,” he said.
A group of the man’s friends were standing nearby, but they didn’t intervene, Garcia said. Video was taken of the Thursday night attack, police said.
“I grabbed the guy by the shoulder and said, ‘Get off of her, this isn’t right,’ and the guy yelled at me like, ‘Mind your own business.’ He pulled away from the girl and then he got aggressive me. He tried to throw a few punches, his friends were holding him back,” Garcia told CBS Miami.
Police arrested Christopher Shaw, 34, and charged him with sexual battery. He is being held on $500,000 bail. It is unclear if he has entered a plea.
Police said evidence they recovered shows Shaw may have been involved in other rapes.
“I hold strong moral values and I don’t think anyone should be taken advantage of in that kind of way,” Garcia told First Coast News.
