Hundreds Attend Girl's Birthday Party Thanks to Mom's Facebook Appeal
Her party became an event not to be missed.
Like any kid turning 10, Mackenzie Moretter of Shakopee, Minnesota, was looking forward to big birthday party, But days before the party, all of the invited guests declined the invitation.
Mackenzie said, "I was sad that no one was coming."
Mackenzie was born with a rare genetic disorder called Sotos syndrome which caused brain damage that makes socializing difficult for her. She says she's often alone on the playground because "kids don't want to play with me."
Her father, Matt said, "She's never really had any friends."
Her mom, Jenny Moretter was heartbroken, and decided it wasn't going to happen again this year. She stepped in and posted a message on Facebook, hoping families in the area with kids around Mackenzie's age would show up.
Her message went viral and In 12 hours, hundreds of people turned out, including Minnesota Vikings football player Charles Johnson and Elsa from Frozen, The community quickly rallied and local businesses donated food, drinks, cupcakes and a Frozen-themed birthday cake. City officials hosted the party in a park.
Shakopee's Mayor Brad Tabke officially declared April 18, 2015 to be "Mackenzie Moretter Day."
The next day, Jenny wrote on her Facebook page, "From the moment Mackenzie has been born, she's made a unique mark on the world. She's been a light to everyone that knows her. This is why in planning her party, I was so taken aback when individuals didn't RSVP. On Saturday, you changed the life of a little girl that many of you have never met. And, you've given this mother purpose to spread a message of acceptance, tolerance and love."
Mackenzie told the crowd, "I have a hard making friends in school, but thanks to all of you, my voice was heard. I love you all."
