There was chaos outside court as Heather and her boyfriend, Tommy Schaefer, arrived to their sentencing for beating Chicago socialite Sheila Mack to death on vacation on the paradise island of Bali last year and stuffing the body in a suitcase.
Tears streamed down Heather's face as the judge said the fact that she had given birth to a baby behind bars saved her from a much longer prison term.
Minutes later she was seen drinking from the bottle of Sprite, and photographers claimed they could smell that the Sprite had been replaced by alcohol.
She described life in prison with her baby, saying, "It is a tough gig, I admit it."
Twenty-one-year-old Tommy Schaefer also wept and buried his head in his hands when he heard his sentence: 18 years behind bars.
As he was escorted to the bus to return to jail, he angrily lashed out at photographers.
And as he sat in the front seat, he did it again. He slapped a camera and then made an obscene gesture.
