Escaped Killer Richard Matt Said to Be Ladies' Man, Artful Seducer
Two prisoners who escaped from a maximum-security New York prison may have had help from the inside.
Two vicious killers who escaped from a maximum-security prison may have had inside help.
One of the fugitives, Richard Matt, is said to be a ladies’ man and artful seducer.
Former correctional officer Gary Heyward, author of the memoir, “Corruption Officer,” says illicit relationships between prisoners and female workers are common.
"It is possible that a female could have been romantically involved with one of them, and assisted them," he said.
The entire escape was like a reenactment of Shawshank Redemption.
Using stolen power tools, they cut through a steel wall in the back of their cells. They scrambled down a six-story catwalk. Then broke through a brick wall and cut their way into a steam pipe. The pipe was only 24 inches wide.
INSIDE EDITION’S Steven Fabian found out what it was like to crawl through one. "I'm on my hands and knees, just crawling on my stomach, [doing an] Army crawl. You have to keep in mind, what they were in was a lot darker, and it was a more intricate maze of pipes," he said.
From the pipe, they found a manhole and emerged about 100 yards outside the prison walls to freedom.
The prisoners left dummies in their beds to fool guards into thinking they were asleep - just like a scene from the Clint Eastwood movie, Escape From Alcatraz.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo toured the prison on Saturday. "They must have kept you awake with all that cutting, huh?" he said to one prisoner. Cuomo asked an official how the prisoners removed the bricks.
“Chiseled the blocks out,” said a prison official.
Cuomo followed the prisoners’ escape route step-by-step. Now there is an international manhunt for the escaped killers. The prison is only 25 miles from the Canadian border, where there are many places to cross undetected.
Thirty-four-year-old David Sweat is serving a life sentence for killing a deputy sheriff in 2002. Forty-eight-year-old Richard Matt is serving 25 to life for murdering and dismembering his former boss.
The two killers have nothing to lose and could literally be anywhere.
