Former First Lady Laura Bush is coming to the defense of the Obamas, asking Americans to back off the harsh criticism the President and First Lady have been receiving lately.
"I wish—I hope—Americans would take a step back and take a deep breath," said Mrs. Bush.
Mrs. Bush, who was in New Orleans for the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, told Good Morning America that she knows exactly how it feels to come under such intense scrutiny.
When asked if she thought the Obama family is experiencing some of what she and President Bush had, Mrs. Bush replied, "Well sadly, I think it's just a part of life for the President and the President's family. And it's too bad, because it comes from every direction."
This has been a particularly rough summer for the Obamas. The First Lady was blasted as a "modern day Marie Antoinette" for taking a luxurious overseas trip to Spain during these tough economic times.
And President Obama is coming under fire for going on another vacation, this time on Martha's Vineyard, where he was spotted today on a 6-mile bike ride with his family.
"Since he's been in office, this is his sixth vacation. Yep, he'll have plenty of time for vacations when his one term is up," joked David Letterman on his Late Night show.
Mrs. Bush says cut the first family some slack, saying, "Realize that people who are serving in public office are truly that—servants."
