Friend: Graduate Who Allegedly Planned to Join ISIS on His Honeymoon is 'Non-Violent, Polite Kid'
A friend of Muhammad Dakhlalla, 22, who allegedly planned to join ISIS with his fiancee, speaks out on his character.
A young American couple is accused of trying to join ISIS on their honeymoon.
Video shows a happy Jaelyn Delshaun Young receiving her high school diploma in Vicksburg, Mississippi, in 2013.
She was a cheerleader that had a bright future, and was planning to marry 22-year-old Muhammad Dakhlalla, known as Mo, who just graduated from Mississippi State University, where they both met.
INSIDE EDITION’s Les Trent spoke to lawyer Dennis Harmon, who's been a friend of his family for more than 15 years.
“He's a sweet kid,” Harmon said, “He is just completely non-violent, very kind, no temper, just a very quiet, polite kid. “
Everyone was shocked when this couple was arrested over the weekend, with the FBI saying they planned to fly to Europe to join ISIS in Syria.
In the criminal complaint, Jaelyn allegedly wrote an undercover agent: "Our story will be that we are newlyweds on our honeymoon."
She reportedly had recently converted to Islam and his father is a local Imam.
Trent asked Harmon: “How did the family react when they heard the news from the FBI and found out their son was under investigation?”
“They were stunned. The FBI asked if they could search Mo’s room, they said, ‘sure,’” he said.
Mo is an accomplished martial arts student and has trained with instructor Doug Bedsaul since the age of nine.
Bedsaul said Mo was: “Always pleasant, very nice, athletic, but also very shy.”
Jaelyn’s parents were outside court and what makes the story even more puzzling -- her mom is a middle school principal and her dad is a Vicksburg police officer who served in the U.S. military for 22 years.
Federal agents say they started talking with Jaelyn online in May when she allegedly expressed an interest in travelling to Syria in support of ISIS.
