'Straight Outta Compton' Is Not Actually Playing in Compton Because There Are No Movie Theaters

'Straight Outta Compton' may be killing it at the box office but it is not screening in its namesake neighborhood.
Residents of Compton will have to get straight out of their city to see the film that's dominating the box office.

While Straight Outta Compton includes the city's name, it is not actually playing in the area - because there are no movie theaters.
USC professor of sociology Manuel Pastor told CBS Los Angeles: “It's a low income area, it's been heavily dis-invested in. When you live in a community that doesn't have that kind of retail, it's a sign that the community is devalued and people within the community feel devalued."
Negotiations are currently ongoing to bring an entertainment district to the city, including a cinema.
“Seventy percent of that would be the movie theater, and then there would be an additional thirty percent retail space,” Compton City Manager Johnny Ford said. “As they’re coming in, retailers are making... Compton, and that’s what it’s all about.”

The movie depicts the story of N.W.A. and their rise in the music world during the late 1980's. The film earned over $60 million on its opening weekend.
While residents will not be able to see it in their city, they will get a financial boost from one of its famous residents.
Former N.W.A. member and entrepreneur, Dr. Dre, who just released his first album in 16 years – Compton: The Soundtrack, will donate royalties to create a new arts and entertainment center for children.
Dre’s album was streamed 25 million times in its first week and debuted No.2 on the Billboard charts when it was released earlier this month.
