Tara Monroe, 20, a Texas State junior, is driving the Barbie Jeep to get to class.

She said that after her license was suspended, she wasn't interested in riding a bike.

Her dad told INSIDE EDITION: “I had a perfectly good bike. She lived close enough to campus. I thought that was the right action to take.”

But Monroe told IE: “I am kind of a diva... I don't like to sweat, I don’t like to work out.”

Then she remembered the Barbie car she had when she was a little kid. She loved that car, so she tracked down a new one to buy.

She told a woman she wanted to test-drive it and when she arrived to give it a spin, the woman asked, “‘Where is the little girl?'"

Monroe said: "I was like, 'I am the little girl.'"

There’s no speeding in the vehicle:  five miles an hour is all it'll do.

“There’s three gears: reverse, turtle and rabbit,” she explained.

Monroe has been criticized by some who think she's making light of a serious drunk-driving offense.  But the engineering major, who is on the dean's list, said that's just not true.

“I am not trying to make a joke out of that. I just didn’t want to walk to class,” she said.

And she’s not alone. Others are jumping on the Barbie bandwagon.

“My roommate just bought one, too,” she said. “It’s more just a fun thing to do with your friend.”

Monroe denies she was driving while intoxicated and said her license was suspended because she refused to take a breathalyzer test.
