Diver Discovers GoPro on River Bottom, Finds Family 1 Year After Dad Thought He'd Lost Footage
Kyle Puelston thought he'd never again see his family's home videos after losing the GoPro last year.
A diver discovered a GoPro camera at the bottom of a river, and managed to find the family it belonged to.
As the family splashed around on vacation, it was all being recorded by a waterproof GoPro camera that dad, Kyle Puelston, wore on his head.
As Puelston jumped into the river, he lost the camera. “When I hit the water, I felt the strap come off my head,” he told INSIDE EDITION.
The impact ripped the GoPro off his head, and it sank to the bottom of the Temperance River in Minnesota.
Puelston spent 30 minutes searching in vain. The waterproof camera was actually still rolling the entire time.
“That was it, thought it was gone,” said dad. He assumed that the precious family videos were lost forever.
Fast-forward to a year later, and lo and behold, a diver found the camera while snorkeling.
Amazingly, it still worked. As Chris Flores checked the footage, he realized he'd found someone's treasure trove of memories. "I know how irreplaceable videos and pictures are," he told IE.
Flores resolved to track down the family and return their camera. He looked through the footage and found that Puelston used the GoPro to record himself at work. He's a cop - a member of an elite SWAT team.
“I paused the video and zoomed in on the patch that the officers were wearing and it said, 'Chisago County SWAT,' so I Googled ‘Chisago County SWAT,’” he said.
That led him straight to Puelston, who was full of gratitude when he dropped by to meet Flores, his wife and kids. The irreplaceable family treasure was back where it belongs.
"It's going to be fun to go back out to the river and jump in, and say, 'This is where Chris found the camera,'" said Puelston.
