At least three runners have reportedly been attacked by what is being described as a large barred owl on Capital Crescent Trail near Bethesda.
The attacks happened after nightfall or before dawn in the last two weeks.Officials say the bird swoops down on runners’ heads from behind.
The injuries have been minor scratches.
One of the victims, a former Washington Post reporter Del Wilber told the paper: “I felt something hit me in the back of the head. Another guy was like, ‘Looks like a bird got you.’ ”
Montgomery Parks officials have posted signs warning about the owl attacks.
Owls, which are nocturnal creatures, hunt at night.
Bill Hamilton, principal natural resources specialist for the parks told the Washington Post: “One reason parks are open from sunrise to sunset is so predatory animals have a chance to hunt.”
The pesky owl is believed to be a juvenile and officials think it has outgrown its habitat and looking to go out on its own.
