Oprah Winfrey's 'Son': I Only Surprised Her to Apologize For Letting Her Down
Calvin Mitchell surprised Oprah as she left "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert."
Oprah Winfrey was floored after a recent taping of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert when a man approached her to say thank you, and to apologize, for a kindness delivered 20 years ago.
Calvin Mitchell, 35, was just a kid when he met Oprahon a movie set where he was working as an extra. He was 12 and he touched the star’s heart by offering to get her a Coke.
“And from there, my whole life changed,” he told INSIDE EDITION.
She was so taken with his gesture that she arranged for him to attend a private school in Mississippi and paid his tuition.
“We started talking about education and that’s all she wanted for me, a better education," he said.
But he dropped out at age 17, despite Oprah’s encouragement to stick it out.
He is now a truck driver with two children.
Mitchell waited outside after her recent Late Show appearance to say thanks and to apologize for her letting her down, he said.
Witnesses told INSIDE EDITION that Oprah told him, “Calvin, you just take care of yourself.”
He added: "It hurts me that I let her down, it bothers me I never had a chance to apologize."
