Chipotle-linked E. coli Outbreak Now Reported in 6 States
Three additional states have reported people infected with the outbreak, the CDC reported Friday.
An outbreak of E. coli linked to food served at Chipotle restaurants has been reported in three new states, bringing the total states where illnesses have been reported to six.
The Centers for Disease Control said Friday that people have been sickened in California, New York and Ohio.
Previous cases were reported in Oregon and Washington, as well as in Minnesota. Most of the cases have been reported in Oregon and Washington, starting Oct. 19.
As of Friday, 45 cases had been reported coast to coast in California (2), Minnesota (2), New York (1), Ohio (1), Oregon (13), and Washington (26), according to CDC totals.
Sixteen of the people who've fallen ill have been hospitalized with no deaths reported.
The CDC said "a common meal item or ingredient served at Chipotle Mexican Grill restaurants in several states is a likely source of this outbreak," but it remained unclear what that ingredient was.
Chipotle is working alongside the CDC and local and state health officials to help trace the outbreak.
The company said in a statement they are taking "aggressive steps" to end the outbreak. The company closed 43 restaurants in Oregon and Washington in late October. Those restaurants have since been reopened.
"The source of the problem appears to have been contained during a period in late October," the company statement read. "In response to this incident, Chipotle has taken aggressive steps to make sure its restaurants are as safe as possible. There have been no reported new cases in Washington or Oregon since Chipotle put its remediation plan into effect."
