A man is mauled by a bear in his own driveway and lives to tell the terrifying story. INSIDE EDITION has the details.
The mauled and mangled face of a man attacked by a bear in his own driveway!
John Chelminiak, a city councilman from Bellevue, Washington was walking the dog at his vacation home when he was attacked.
"In a split second, I could see the bear coming, and she just launched right into me. I just vividly remember being bitten on the head, and the sound that makes as her teeth were going into my head," said John.
"I felt if she had a chance to get me on my back and go for my neck or abdomen, I was probably dead," John added.
John broke free, but only briefly.
"I started running up the driveway, and the bear came around the corner and pounced on the dogs. At that point, we started going at it on the driveway. She was clawing on me and I was trying to push her off," said John.
The bear left John for dead. His frantic wife Lynn found him crumpled in the driveway and called 911.
"Hurry, hurry! He is curled up and oh God, his head is all bashed in!" Lynn told 911.
John's moans can be heard in the background.
"I'm dying!" John cries.
"He said he's dying. Please! Help!" pleads Lynn.
Lynn started to scream for her neighbors to come and help, when another moment of fear occurs for the couple.
"I see the animal. It's walking across the street right now. I can't tend to my husband because I'm worried about the bear coming back," Lynn tells 911.
Lynn can also be heard try to calm her husband.
"You just stay breathing and stay calm, my dear. Okay, you're doing a good job, sweetheart," says Lynn.
She is also heard lamenting her husband's attack, saying, "I'm so sorry, John. God! I shouldn't have let him go out."
The picture taken today of John Chelminiak when he and his wife held a news conference at the hospital shows the extent of his injuries. He's lost his left eye.
Despite his injuries, John is still counting his blessings, saying, "It's a miracle that I made it through."
The bear that caused those horrible wounds was later shot and killed by authorities.
