'Star Wars' Shatters Opening Weekend Records By Bringing in $238 Million
The force was strong with 'Star Wars' at the box office on its opening weekend.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens obliterated every opening weekend record in movie history.
The film earned a whopping $238 million in North America and $517 million worldwide.
The opening surpassed Jurassic World's incredible opening this past summer, which brought in $208.7 million in the U.S.
But Star Wars is currently second to Jurassic World internationally, which opened at $525 million.
“It was bigger than a movie,” Dave Hollis, Disney’s distribution chief, told Variety. “It became a cultural event.”
The latest installment also lured 3D viewers; 47 percent of ticket gross came from 3D screenings and 12 percent came from IMAX.
