Mother Sentenced to Life In Prison Without Parole for Killing Her 3 Young Daughters
Two-year-old Sophia, 16-month-old Yazmine and two-month-old Xenia had been stabbed to death with a kitchen knife.
A California mother who murdered her three young daughters was sentenced to life in prison without parole, officials said Monday.
Carol Ann Coronado, 32, was found lying in a pool of blood on a bed next to her little girls in their Torrance home on May 20, 2014, authorities said.
Her daughters—two-year-old Sophia, 16-month-old Yazmine and two-month-old Xenia—had been stabbed to death with a kitchen knife. Prosecutors said Coronado killed her children before trying to harm herself.
The children were found dead by their grandmother, who Coronado was accused of attempting to kill as well, officials said.
Coronado’s husband had been working on a pickup truck across the street from their home when the woman ran out of the home yelling “she killed the babies,” according to the Los Angeles Times.
The inconsolable father said he saw “a demon” inside his wife when he saw the scene, the paper wrote.
Coronado pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, but a judge ruled she was sane at the time of the murders.
She was convicted of three counts of first-degree murder last year after a bench trial.
A motive for the killings remains unclear, but prosecutors said Coronado may have wanted revenge on her husband, who told her he was considering a divorce, the Daily Breeze reported.
Coronado’s attorney, who maintained his client was suffering from postpartum psychosis, said he plans to appeal.
