At a press conference on Tuesday, they appeared with Florida Lottery Secretary Tom Delacenserie in Tallahassee where they were presented with a check of $528,784,000 in the name of the Nickel 95 Trust, of which they are trustees.
They opted to take a single lump-sum payment of $327.8 million before taxes.
They bought the winning Powerball ticket at a Publix supermarket in Melbourne Beach, Florida.
“We didn’t believe it. We kept watching TV and going online,” Smith told reporters. “We just kept quiet. Publix is my second home, the people there are so nice, it was very hard not to tell anybody.”
The duo was afraid of telling anyone and coming forward.
Kaltschmidt said: “I lost a lot of sleep. I lost over 10 pounds, it was a lot of pacing at night.”
“We were worried about what was going to happen. We are no longer in a quiet place,” she added.
There were two other winning tickets in the biggest lottery jackpot in history.
