112-Year-Old Holocaust Survivor is Named The World's Oldest Living Man
Israel Kristal weighed only 81 lbs when he was rescued by Allied forces in 1945.
Israel Kristal, an 112-year-old Auschwitz survivor, has been named the world's oldest man by the Guinness World Records.
"I don't know the secret for long life," Kristal said, according to Guinness. "There have been smarter, stronger, and better looking men than me who are no longer alive."
Not only did the 112-year-and-178-day-old survive the tests of time, Kristal also survived years of hard labor during imprisonment in concentration camps, and two world wars.
Kristal was born on September 15, 1903 in a village in central Poland while it was still part of the Russian Empire. He was born into a Jewish Orthodox family and learned to speak Hebrew at a young age.
He was 11 when he was separated from his parents during the First World War. The Guinness World Records said that he also never had a bar mitzvah "due to the hardships of WWI."
He moved to Lodz, a larger Polish city, in 1920 to work in a family-owned confectionary business, until it was invaded by Nazi Germany.
Kristal, his wife, and two children were moved into a ghetto in 1939, and four years later, the family was sent to various concentration camps including Auschwitz.
Kristal was the only one in his family to survive the Holocaust. When Allied forces arrived in May 1945, he weighed only 81lbs, the Guinness World Records reported.
He remarried, and in 1950, he emigrated with his wife and their son to Israel. Since then, he's continued to develop his family's confectionary business, and grow their family.
He currently lives in Haifa, Israel, surrounded by his loving family.
Before Kristal, Yasutaro Koide of Japan was the oldest living man until passing away in January 2016. The current oldest living person of either gender is Susannah Mushatt, an American, who approaching her 116th birthday. The oldest person to has ever lived was Jeanne Calmet, a French woman who passed away in 1997.
