Former Presidents, Hollywood Stars Gather to Say Goodbye To Nancy Reagan
The former first lady was eulogized by her daughter, Patti Davis, at her funeral on Friday.
First Lady Michelle Obama, former President George W. Bush and wife Laura, former President Jimmy Carter and wife Rosalyn, Hillary Clinton and Caroline Kennedy were all in attendance.
More than 1,000 other guests joined them, including Barbara Walters, Larry King, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Katie Couric, Sam Donaldson, Bo Derek, Gary Sinise, Tom Selleck, Anjelica Houston and Mr. T, who was a spokesman on Mrs. Reagan's "Just Say No" to drugs campaign.
Diane Sawyer read from The Bible while Tom Brokaw shared memories of Mrs. Reagan. He said she was her husband's "best political advisor" and she was a "politically astute analyst and keeper of the flames."
Mrs. Reagan was eulogized by her daughter Patti Davis, who made peace with her mom after years of strained relations.
"I tried her patience and she intimidated me. We were never mild with one another. Whenever we were distant or angry or binded and close, our emotions burned up the color chart. Nothing was ever grey," she said. "There were moments in our history where all that was going on was love. I choose to remember those moments."
Her brother Ronald Jr. also eulogized their mother.
"There would be no Ronald Reagan Presidential Library without a President Ronald Reagan. There likely would not be a President Ronald Reagan without a Nancy Reagan," he said.
Mrs. Reagan planned every detail, including a touching love letter from her Ronnie that was read by a dear friend, former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney.
Finally, as a lone bagpiper played, Mrs. Reagan was interred beside her husband, her final wish, and a touching end to a great American love story.
