She Danced With the Obamas At Age 106; Now She's Playing With the Harlem Globetrotters At Age 107
Virginia McLurin is old, but she ain't dead yet. Her 107th birthday, she tossed a basketball with the Harlem Globetrotters.
At age 107, Virginia McLaurin is not unlike a Timex watch – she takes a licking and keeps on ticking.
The Washington, D.C., woman has survived Jim Crow, segregation, the Civil Rights movement and 18 presidents.
And on the occasion of her 107th birthday this week, she played a little b-ball with the Harlem Globetrotters.
Team members Moose Weekes and Zeus McClurkin presented their oldest fan with jersey emblazoned with “McLurin” and the number 107, for embodying their organization’s philosophy of being active and having a positive attitude.
She’s got all that, and more.
Last month, at age 106, she boogied on into the White House to celebrate Black History month with President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle.
McLaurin was so excited to meet the country’s first black president she started dancing and the first couple danced, too.
A video of the joyous encounter captivated the Internet.
She charmed the president, too. “What’s the secret to still dancing at 106?” he asked. “Just keep moving,” she replied.
She was doing plenty of that at the Roots Public Charter School in D.C., where she still volunteers. The Globetrotters team members spoke to a group of children there and praised McLaurin’s strong soul and generosity of spirit.
When it was her turn to speak, McLurin kept her remarks brief. “Go to school. Get all the education you can.”
