First Graders Plotted to Poison Classmate, Officials Say
A school district in Alaska told the parents of students at a charter school that three first graders intended to poison another with silica gel.
A school district in Alaska says three first-graders plotted to kill a classmate with poison.
Parents of 32 first-graders at Winterberry Charter School in Anchorage received an email Tuesday saying the students, all girls, planned to kill a fellow student with silica gel in the mistaken belief that it's poison.
School district officials say the students acknowledged they planned the poisoning after another child told a teacher.
"Three students in the class were planning on using the silica gel packets (these are not actually poison, but the students believed they were) from their lunchtime seaweed to poison and kill another student," the email said.
After disciplining the girls was left up to the school district, the email to parents said there would be "significant consequences."
District spokeswoman Heidi Embley declined to reveal to InsideEdition.com what those consequences will be.
However, principal Shanna Mall told KTUU the children will be suspended.
In a statement, the school district said:
"Student safety is our top priority. We take any threat to students very seriously and investigate it immediately. We have safety measures in place at every one of our schools.
"Staff at Winterberry Charter School took prompt action when the concern came to staff’s attention last week. While we cannot go into details on whether the young students fully understood their intended actions or what disciplinary actions were taken, we encourage parents to speak to their children about being safe."
