Michael John Paul Banks of Fresno, California, decided to climb the side of 600-foot Morro Rock before he remotely proposed to his girlfriend, via FaceTime.
She said yes, but the real cliffhanger was how Banks was going to climb down.
The 27-year-old man quickly became stuck on the side of the landmark.
According to officials, the man attempted to take a different path down, but soon became stranded, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Fire Chief Steven Knuckles from the Morro Bay Fire Department told InsideEdition.com that officials were alerted to the scene after he yelled for help and called 911.
Footage the Morrow Bay Fire Department posted to their Twitter showed a California Highway Patrol helicopter coming to his rescue in what became a one hour ordeal.
Unfortunately for Banks, the volcanic land form located off the coast of Morro Bay was declared a California Historical Landmark in 1968, making it illegal to climb.
Once Banks was brought down by rescue teams, he was arrested and booked into San Luis Obispo County Jail.
The man was charged with trespassing, and bond was set at $10,000.

Knuckles also told IE.com: "he will be charged for the emergency response since it was an illegal climbing of the Rock."
In a statement, officials said: "We hope folks will choose to view it [Morro Rock] from below, saving themselves and our fire responders time and money and protecting everyone's safety."
