Woman Found Guilty of DUI Killing of Girl, 6, Who Was Crossing the Street With Her Mom and Sister
Jessicah Louise Cowan was found guilty of murder in the horrific 2012 hit and run death of Osmara Meza in Santa Ana, California.
A California woman has been found guilty of murder in the grisly 2012 hit-and-run death of a 6-year-old girl.
Jessicah Cowan, 37, was found guilty of multiple counts, including murder, vehicular manslaughter and hit and run on Friday in the killing Osmara Meza.
Osmara was holding hands with her 7-year-old sister and their mother in a Santa Ana crosswalk on their way to their favorite breakfast spot when Cowan blew through a red light.
She drove on before losing control and crashing into the center median. She then drove through another red light before a witness placed her car in front of Cowan's, reports KTLA.
Osmara was pronounced dead at the scene. Gresia and Eloisa were transported to the hospital to be treated for traumatic brain injuries, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office,
Osmara was later buried in the same pink dress she'd worn weeks earlier at her kindergarten graduation, the OC Register reported.
Her mother, Eloisa Magaña, was still in a coma when her daughter was buried. She remained in the coma six weeks.
Osmara's sister, Grecia, was in a coma for six weeks following the accident.
The Santa Ana Police Department responded to the scene and arrested Cowan. At the time of her arrest, the defendant also possessed marijuana in her vehicle, prosecutors said.
Cowan was charged with one felony count each of murder, vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence while intoxicated, hit and run with permanent injury or death, hit and run with injury.
She was charged with two felony counts of driving under the influence causing bodily injury, two felony counts of driving with a blood alcohol content of .08% or more causing bodily injury, and an infraction for possession of marijuana while driving.
Cowan faces a maximum sentence of 15 years to life in state prison at her sentencing on June 10.
