Check Out these 13 Household Hacks Guaranteed To Make Your Life Easier
From ripening avocados to repairing scratched furniture, we've got you covered.
If you're clueless in the kitchen or hapless around the house, here are some handy tips to remember that will make cooking, cleaning and — most importantly — living, so much easier.
Brittney Levine, a lifestyle expert and host of Marie Claire's The Fix, has shared her treasure trove of secrets with Inside Edition.
1) Stopping Water From Boiling Over
If you have a pot of water boiling over, simply place a wooden spoon over the pot. It pops the bubbles before they can overflow.
2) Ripening Hard Avocados
No one wants to eat a hard avocado. But according to Levine, "you can get an avocado to be soft and ripe in less than 20 minutes."
Just wrap the hard avocados in tin foil, place them in the oven at 200 degrees for 20 minutes and they become soft and ripe.
3) De-Stalking Strawberries
Cutting the green leaves and tough cores out of juicy strawberries can be a pain, but it doesn't have to be.
Levine suggests the simple act of putting a straw at the base of the fruit and pushing it all the way through to take out the core.
4) Easy Frozen Yogurt Pops
Poke a slot in the top of a yogurt pack and slide popsicle sticks in. Place them in the freezer and let them harden. It will produce healthy — and tasty — frozen treats to cool everyone off.
5) Cooling a Drink in 15 Minutes
If you have friends coming over for a last-minute visit and realize you need to get your beer and soda ice cold, Levine has an easy kitchen hack that can help.
Wrap the bottles or cans in a wet paper towel and pop them in the freezer. Within 15 minutes, they will be ice cold and ready to be served.
6) Easy Storage for a Case of Canned Beverages
When opening a case of beer or soda, just cut off one side of the box and stick that end into the fridge first. Then, open the other end and slowly push the cans through while pulling back the box.
7) Properly Chilling Wine
Having a problem keeping your wine cool? Just chill — Levine's got this. She suggests using frozen grapes in your wine glass.
Keep a bag of frozen grapes in the freezer. They'll keep a drink cold just like ice cubes, but won't water down your fine wine.
8) Peeling Hard Boiled Eggs
No one likes peeling egg shells. Levine suggests putting a hardboiled egg in a plastic container with a little water in it. Close the lid and shake it up.
Take the egg out and peeling the shell will be so much easier.
9) Check If an Egg is Bad
Last one to use this tip is a rotten egg. To test whether an egg is spoiled, drop one in a bowl of water. If it sinks, all is well. If it floats, toss it.
10) Getting Tomato Paste Out of a Can
If you ever have trouble getting tomato paste out of those tiny cans, this hack will help augment that issue.
Open up the can like usual, then turn it over and open the other side. Then, just push the paste out.
11) Cutting Tomatoes
Cutting tomatoes individually can be so time consuming, but it doesn't have to be.
Levine suggests putting the tomatoes on a cutting board and put a plate over the tomatoes. Using the plate as a guide, you can cut across all the tomatoes at once.
12) Fixing Scratches on Your Floor
If you have scratches on your wooden floor, Levine says to use a walnut to keep them, and the scratches, covered.
The oil in a walnut helps cover the marks on the floor.
13) Getting a Quick Charge to Your iPhone
If you need a quick charge to your iPhone, Levine suggests using the charger to an iPad.
"You’re charging your phone with the wrong charger,” she said. “Pick up the iPad charger and it will literally charge your phone in half the time."
