Two Horses Die in Tragic Year for the Preakness Stakes

Two horses died in the first four races held Saturday at Pimlico Race Track in a dark year for Preakness Day.

In the first undercard race of the annual Baltimore event, 9-year-old gelding Homeboykris trotted away a winner.

Unfortunately, the horse's 14th win would be his last. After leaving the winner's circle, Homeboykris the Maryland-born thoroughbred suffered a fatal cardiovascular collapse.

Homeboykris, whose owners include former New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers manager Joe Torre, will reportedly be taken to New Bolton Center in Pennsylvania for an autopsy.

And even before the banner race of the day, another animal would die.

In the fourth race, Pramedya broke down around the turn in the fourth race. The 4-year-old filly was euthanized on the track after breaking her left front cannon bone, the AP reports.

Pramedya's jockey was also injured. Daniel Centeno was taken away in an ambulance after reportedly breaking his collar bone.

The track was extremely muddy Saturday as rain soaked the Baltimore area.

The 2016 Kentucky Derby winner, Nyquist, fell short in a bid for the coveted Triple Crown, losing to Exaggerator in the main event.
