Mom Fends Off Mountain Lion That Attacked Her 5-Year-Old Son
A Colorado mom heard her son screaming in their yard outside Aspen before she found him in the jaws of a mountain lion.
A Colorado mother has been dubbed a hero after she saved her 5-year-old son from the jaws of a mountain lion.
Authorities say the boy and his older brother were playing outside in their yard near Aspen around 8 p.m. Friday when the predator pounced.
Hearing his screams, the mother rushed outside, where her instincts immediately kicked in.
"The mother ran outside, saw the mountain lion on her son and was able to physically remove her son from the mountain lion," officials said in a statement.
The boy's father called 911 while driving his bleeding son to an area hospital.
Wildlife officials followed the father's directions to the location of the attack and have since found and euthanized the 2-year-old mountain lion.
According to KMGH, the mountain lion was still in the family's yard.
The boy arrived to the hospital in fair condition with injuries to his face, head and neck, officials said. The mother sustained minor injuries to her hand and legs.
Friday's attack was the first such encounter between humans and mountain lions in Colorado since last year.
Since 1991, three people have been killed by the animals in Colorado.
