Residents of a South Carolina apartment complex believe a group of creepy clowns have been hanging around.

Residents of a South Carolina apartment complex believe a group of creepy clowns have been hanging around nearby, possibly even trying to lure their kids into the woods using wads of cash.

The unusual reports started at the Fleetwood Manor Apartments in Greenville in the last week or so, where multiple residents contacted police with descriptions of a clown or multiple clowns first spotted by area children.

In a report, the Greenville County Sheriff's Office said a deputy went to Fleetwood Manor August 21 to conduct a follow-up investigation of reports from two callers the day before who said a person dressed in clown clothes and makeup was trying to entice kids into the woods nearby.

One woman told the deputy that her son saw clowns who were "whispering and making strange noises."  The woman’s older son told the deputy that he heard chains and banging on the front door of their home.

Another resident reported seeing a clown with a blinking nose who waved to her but did not speak.

According to the deputy, several children from Fleetwood Manor told him several clowns have been appearing in the woods behind one of the buildings and trying to persuade them to enter the woods by waving large amounts of money.

The kids apparently believe the clowns live in a house near a pond at the end of a trail into the woods.

In a statement, Public Information Officer Drew Pinciaro said no one was discovered matching the description he was given.

"This case has been assigned to our Follow-Up unit for further investigation and we also have deputies extra patrolling that area," he said.
