Man Sentenced For Sexually Assaulting His Wife

INSIDE EDITION follows up on a story we reported earlier this year of a husband accused of raping his own wife. He has now been convicted of sexual assault.

A woman who says she was raped by her own husband confronts him in court.

It happened as 40-year-old Shawn Harris was sentenced for sexually assaulting his wife in their bedroom in their upscale San Diego home.

In a dramatic victim impact statement, 37-year-old Crystal Harris said she is afraid her now ex-husband will murder her when he is set free.

"This is not the way things were supposed to be for us! He was the one we trusted to take care of us. He betrayed us!  And he humiliated all of us. And my heart still breaks when I think how this happened and how our lives came crashing apart," says Crystal Harris.

But another woman in Harris's life, his mom, told the judge she still believes he is innocent.

"My son has been gone for two and a half years and I believe he's totally innocent," says Shawn's mother.

Shawn sat impassively throughout the emotionally charged hearing and says, "I sincerely apologize to everyone affected by my actions. I do not harbor any ill will towards my former spouse."

Crystal Harris captured the violent 2008 assault on audio tape. It happened as their two children slept in another room.

The judge referred to the harrowing recording as she sentenced Harris to six years in prison.

"To hear your wife screaming for her life and begging you to stop what you were doing. It's unthinkable. The defendant will be committed to the department of corrections for six years," ruled the judge.

Outside court his ex-wife said the case is a tragedy for the whole family.

"It's a story about a family that got ripped apart from within and it still makes me sad," says Crystal.

Although Harris was sentenced to six years, he is expected to get out in only three years because of the time he has already served.
