Big Dog on Campus: USC's Newest Employee Is a Canine

USC has a new pup employee who is touching the heart of students.

The University of Southern California added a new full-time staff member to its roster, but their new hire happens to be furry and four-legged.

Named after the school’s mascot, Professor Beauregard (Beau) Tirebiter, a 2-year-old Goldendoodle, holds a job in the campus’ Office for Wellness and Health Promotion.

His responsibilities include being social, relieving stress and making visitors happy.

“He is a very chill dog. He loves to cuddle,” said Amanda Vanni, who works in the office with Beau.

Beau works five days a week and Vanni brings Beau home at night. She said his work personality and home personality are pretty different.

“When he’s off duty he has so much energy and loves to run and play fetch. He loves to play with little dogs,” Vanni told “At work, he’s just very calm and affectionate.”

Beau even has office hours, and the line to visit him is usually a pretty long one.

“Oh my goodness, we have had students lining up out the door of the wellness [department] 10 mins before his office hours start,” said Vanni. “Students see him and they get this big smile on their face and some people will shout, 'is that Beau?' It’s been really great to see positive reactions."

Vanni said many of the students have expressed how much beau means to them.

The school has been bringing therapy dogs on campus once a week for the past two years and it’s been a hit with students, so they came up with the idea to have a dog throughout the entire week.

Beau, a wellness dog, was trained in by Canine Angels Service team in Oregon for a year before he secured the position at the university.

Vanni said Beau is still acclimating to his new role, but he’s fitting in quite well at the office.

The school plans to get him a vest with the school colors soon.
