Mom Says She Smothered Her Two Children to Keep Them Safe: 'They're in Heaven Now'

Amber Pasztor says in a jailhouse interview that her children told her they wanted to go to heaven.

The Indiana mother accused of killing her two children said in a jailhouse interview that she smothered her son and daughter to protect them.

“They were in good hands, but I don't think they were safe. My kids are in a better place … They’re in heaven now. They don’t have no worries no more,” Amber Pasztor, 29, said in videotaped interview with WANE-TV.

She spoke via video chat Monday from the Elkhart County Jail, where she is being held without bail on two murder charges.

Pasztor became the subject of an Amber Alert after authorities said she kicked in the door of her parents’ home and kidnapped Rene Pasztor, 6, and Liliana Hernandez, 7.

The mother had lost custody of her children about 18 months ago because of drug use and making threats against her kids, according to her family.

Pasztor drove around with her son and daughter for hours before flagging down an Elkhart police officer, some 70 miles from her home, and told him that the bodies of her son and daughter were in the backseat of the car she was driving, authorities said.

In her jailhouse interview, Pasztor said she first smothered her daughter, then her son. When asked if they fought her, Pasztor replied, “A little bit, yes.”

She also acknowledged killing her Allen County neighbor, Frank Macomber, 65,  during a camping trip the day before she abducted her children, she said on camera.

Pasztor said she shot Macomber with his gun from a distance of about 10 feet. “I’m not proud of it,” she told the station.

She covered his body, then took his gun and his car and went after her kids, she said.

Pasztor has not been charged in connection with that killing.

According to court documents, Pasztor told investigators she killed her children by pinching their noses and holding her hand over their mouths.

She has pleaded not guilty. Her next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 29. A phone message left by with her public defender was not immediately returned.
