Sisterhood of the Yoga Pants: Protests and Death Threats as Man Criticizes Fitness Wear

The trouble began after Alan Sorrentino wrote a letter to his local newspaper criticizing the apparel on women over 50.

About 300 women took to the streets of a Rhode Island town to affirm their right to don yoga pants after they came under scrutiny by a man who took apparent offense to the fitness garb.

The war on yoga pants began Wednesday when Alan Sorrentino, 63, of Barrington, wrote a letter to local newspaper The Barrington Times, complaining about women of a certain age wearing the figure-hugging workout gear.

He wrote: “To all yoga pant wearers, I struggle with my own physicality as I age. I don’t want to struggle with yours.”

He added: "Yoga pants can be adorable on children and young women. However, on mature, adult women there is something bizarre and disturbing about the appearance they make in public. Yuck!"

Jamie Burke, a 40-year-old mom of two, was so outraged by his letter that she organized a peaceful protest that marched right to Sorrentino's door.

“I was stunned so many women came,” she told Inside Edition. "I might have thought that maybe 50 people and some local friends would come and do this walk through the neighborhood. Never would I imagine that 300-400 people would come."

The demonstration featured women of all ages, races, shapes and sizes.

Sorrentino spoke to reporters, saying: “The reaction has been over the top crazy. I've received death threats. I have received threats — things about vandalizing the house.”

He received a barrage of violent voicemails, some of which had callers saying: “We're showing up to your house, you f***,” and “you better watch your a**.”

Sorrentino says the letter was all in jest, but he still hates yoga pants.

“It was just a joke. Wear the yoga pants all you want, but if you knew what guys were saying behind your back when you have them on maybe you wouldn't,” he said.
